AUDIENCE RESEARCH ONE

We found when they didnt like the trailer it was because not enough desciption was given, they seemed to not like the idea of not having too much continuiety.
They didnt like the fact one of the trailers gave too much away. They liked the fact you could introduced to the chracters individually.
They liked the fast pace music to the trailer.

AN IDEA FOR OUR FILM POSTER

I particularly like this poster because of the font which has been edited to seem more ‘chalkish’. I believe it relates to the film narrative as the story is going to be scripted around a teacher’s life. The font used is named Buttercream. However, to make the font seem as if it has been written with chalk, I had to use Filter-Blur-Gaussian Blur and then change the setting to 0.5. After the Gaussian Blur, I added a stroke effect named Parchment. After this I used the eraser tool on opacity 30% and started to erase around the edges of the text to seem more realistic.
Overall I believe the text used in this poster should definitely be repeated in our final poster, as it conveys a strong indication of our film narrative.

FILM TITLE IDEAS

Most of the British Realist films that we have looked at have had very un-cliched and deep titles, they have all been quite self explanatory and simple, such as 'happy go lucky', 'life is sweet', and 'this is england'. Therefore we want to make our title something similar.
As we are creating a film about a teacher it should hint at the idea but subtly.
We could name the character Ms Wright and use a play on words, such as 'Getting It Wright' but then we thought if people took a first glance at the poster without knowing the characters name that they might think its a spelling mistake. However, we then thought as a possible idea where we call her Ms Dunn and name the title 'Get the Job Dunn' as the film will be mostly about her job.

FILM POSTER IDEAS

When working on a mock for our film poster we first looked online for photos of teachers to use as a template. When i came across this image i had an idea for our film poster. I thought that we could get our teacher actor to stand infront of a board just like this and instead of writting encouraging words or something random she could be writting words that are accosisated with the stresses she has to deal with in school. This could act as a huge insight to the films purpose and story and also still be quite neat and simple, something we want to create.

MAGAZINE COVER ANALYSIS

This Little White Lies magazine cover (Kick-Ass editition) has very limited text. I felt this makes the magazine look like its aimed at more of a niche audience rather than a mainstream audience. The illustration of the character gives more of an arty connection to the audience aiming at an arty audience. This draws in the audience as it is something unusual and rare. This comic like cartoon could also attract an audience who reads comics. As the film is based on a comic book this shows they are aiming at an audience who would like the comics giving them a possibly small but dedicated audience. The colours of the suit in the film are iconic therefore they are easily recognisable. The pink could be relevant to the other character in the film ( a little girl who dresses in a similar but pink suit- hit girl). This is also a vibrant colour so would stand out on a shelf of other magazine in a store. The pink dripping down from his face could also suggest that its blood making him look more mysterious like you want to find out more. It would entice the audience.
This Empire magazine cover of the Kick-Ass edition is definately more mainstream than the Little White Lies cover above. This can be shown firstly by the amount of text used on the cover. The use of colloquial language also attracts a younger audience and the use of colour. The coverline at the top of the page advertising a free fold out collectors item could attract the many people that are fans of this film. Posters are something mainly younger audiences are attracted to so they aren't aiming for a very old audience. The fact the cover star is covering the middle title shows that the magazine is confident its well known.

LESSON LOG 29/11/12

Today we went looking for some of our locations and took picture of them. We realised also that there are many things we have yet to discuss such as the storyboard and locations we would be able to shoot in, we may have to change the storyline slightly to be able to film most of the trailer in school rather than most outside of school and at others houses.

MAGAZINE CONVER ANALYSIS

This little white lies magazine cover had very limited text. I felt this makes the magazine look like more of a niche audience and less of a main stream magazine. The illustration of the character gives more of an arty connection with the audience letting them know the information in the magazine would be more focused on the film and artwork than the actor in the film like most mainstream magazines. The illustration connects with the fact this film is a marvel comic film. The colours of the suit are iconic to the film and stand out even more with the pink in the background, as there is pink dripping on his face this could suggest the pink is blood.

This Empire magazine cover version of the Kick- Ass film is definitely more main stream. We can see this by the amount of text they use, how they use it and the images they’ve used. We can tell the guy at the front is the main character as he is central focus of the magazine. The use of colloquial language also attracts a younger audience. The use of text could attract the audience more than the ‘little white lies’ magazine as the rule of three is used a lot to attract the audience and make the magazine more interesting. The border at the top of the page stating the free fold out collectors cover could also attract a younger audience as younger people would be more interested in posters than older.

LESSON LOG 27/11/12

We finished editing our audience research. This was really good because it now allows us to move on freely to storyboarding and then the actualy making. These just need to be uploaded next time we are in the lesson all together.

'WhatsApp'

Our group has been using the application 'WhatsApp', which is a software that allows us to communicate on our mobile phones in a group conversations at the same time. We each invested 69p into the app and have no regrets about the purchase.

WhatsApp has helped bring forward inventive ideas which we have been able to place onto our audience research videos. The image below is an example of how WhatsApp has been able to contribute and promote new ideas.

LESSON LOG/PRODUCTION UPDATE: 20/11/12

During our lesson today we decided to add some more faces for our audience research video. Since we have decided our narrative will be based around teachers within a secondary school, we believed it would be wise to ask some teachers on their own opinion on school life. We showed them the trailer 'Happy go lucky' and then afterwards began to ask how they felt it related to their own work life. Flora, Raye and I, believe today was a success as we now have a clearer insight on teachers personal and work lives.

GROUP POST- TREATMENT

British comedy; Young student teacher, Karen Wright, struggles to fit in at her job both with students and teachers. Her 'free and easy' attitude means she doesnt realise certain social conventions. Her work load is incredibly high and she finds it hard to keep up with everything that everyone else seems to find so easy. She befriends a coloegue- a homosexual man, who appears to have everything really easy he ends up being the one to teach her how to cope resulting in her fitting into her new job. Ending up 'Getting it Wright'!

LESSON LOG: 15/11/12

In this lesson we finalised the treatment. This was a relief as we feel we now are heading in our final direction. In the previous lesson we decided on making the film from a teachers point of view as we feel this will make for more effective and flexible filming time, also if we use one of the drama teachers we can be sure that we wont be dealing with shody acting! We also started finishing off our  audience research. However, we were thinking of doing our research throughout so that we are keeping up with exactly what our audience wants to see and not just making something we want to make. This could be a risk as we wont be able to meet everyones expectations and we feel the genre may be confused at times. We also feel it might be hard to scheduele getting a teacher to film with us so we might have to think outside the box for that one.
We will now start thinking of possible areas in the school to start shooting.

LESSON LOG: 08/11/12

Lesson log - During our lesson today we came up with an idea to structure our trailer on a British view of school life. We feel that a trailer based within a school will not only be interesting, but also convenient as we will have the correct setting to make it seem more realistic. However we have yet to make the decision whether or not to base this on the student’s perspective, the teachers or even both.
We hope to maybe shoot outside of school for scenes such as at home but will have to look in to whether or not we will be able to organise time to take the camera and tripod with us.

LITTLE WHITE LIES MAGAZINE ANNALYSIS

I really like the 'Little White Lies' magazine covers as they are simplistic and mainly just involve the main character of whatever film its based on. Maybe we could think of creating the chosen character on our magazine using collage. I like the way the character takes over the page and is the central focus, if we wanted to focus completely on one character this could help us with our idea. The title is very subtle but as there is no other text it is still very noticeable.

'THIS IS ENGLAND' - LITTLE WHITE LIES MAGAZINE COVER

The little white lies magazine cover is something we think we would want to create for the genre we have chosen. When creating a British Realist Drama we feel our product would not suit a mainstream looking magazine cover such as EMPIRE. We like the fact there is very limited simple text and the one main character at the centre of the magazine.

THIS IS ENGLAND TRAILER

Our group has taken inspiration from the trailer 'This is England'. We liked the shots of the boy moving in black and white at 0.17-0.20 we felt this showed action in the trailer in an interesting way and the fact it was black and white made that part of the trailer stand out.
I like the fact that it follows the life of 6-10 specific characters and shows shots of their ups and downs in the trailer without revealing too much. No major storyline is revealed in the trailer so we know its a British Realist Drama documenting the lives of the characters.

MAINSTREAM FILM POSTERS vs BRITISH DRAMA POSTERS

I have decided to analyse two types of posters; the first half, Ghost busters and Jurassic Park which are typically seen as conventional mainstream posters. The quality of the design is more graphical based, such as the animated ghost who seems supplicated behind bars on the Ghost busters poster, and the historical Jurassic park title font. Both posters seem almost engulfed in black making them seem a lot less energetic and bouncy than the bottom half posters.

The second half are two British film posters, ‘Life is Sweet’and ‘This is England’. Both posters have photographed photos, rather than two animated images to hint at the narrative. Even the title text in ‘This is England’ has been created to seem realistic and worn out. I believe this is because British Drama films decide to go for an audience who can relate to the characters shown on screen, whereas mainstream films are created to give thrill and excitement to the audience, and in fact make the audience want to be the character, rather than being able to relate to them.
Since we have decided to take the path of creating a British Drama, It would be wise to follow on with these traditional methods institutions use. This is why I feel our future poster, should hopefully make our audience feel some similar relation towards the characters we show on our poster.

BRITISH DRAMA (GROUP POST)

We had decided to make a 'hard hitting British drama' that reflects thing that we ourselves know the most about. our inspirations are 'this is england', 'kidulthood' and 'adulthood', 'shallow grave', 'trainspotting' and others.
